I want to grow some of my own food so to can and store food. Food independence is liberty
continue refinine low input gardening methods
To create a first year garden including some of my favorite veggies.
Become a four season gardener. Planted first seeds on jan 1
1. Increase general knowledge of gardening 2. Grow 100% of basil, oregano, thyme, and rosemary needed for the household. 3. Grow all salad greens needed for the household for May-Nov. 4. Start 4 fruit trees.
Got two 4'×8' plots almost ready to go. First I observed the sunlight around my property to see where the optimal spot to plant would be. Next I plotted out two 4'×8' beds in that area and removed the sod. I transplanted the sod to an area of the yard that needed it instead of tilling it under. I then layed some broken down cardboard boxes and lots of water. I haven't gotten the wood to make my raised beds yet or the dirt for that matter but my compost pile has been doing well and I will work it into the soil when I do get it.
Raise enough food that we can survive on for the year.
We bought a farm 70 days ago. I am going to have the biggest gardens I've ever had. Goal is to work several large plot garden and raised beds. Our orchards, our vineyard , and start new gardens.
creat a hugelbed and grow a portion of my own food.
Continue to improve the soil in my small backyard garden by adding compost, horse manure, etc.
I will never be able to complete this skill because it is ongoing. I plan to farm bio-dynamically. I hope to learn somthing new each growing season. I hope to provide food for my family's nourishment, and to grow healthy and tasty food. Fall 2012 - I double dug 2-5'x20' beds and am overwintering with peas, vetch and wheat, which I will dig under when spring comes. I broadforked another 5'x20' bed in which I will plant fodder radish as a way to produce compost material and prepare the bed to be double dug. Only 53 more beds to go! When the rooting moon is here (Dec. 16, 2012, I missed the one on the 9th), I will plant those radishes and will also spray the prep #500 Horn Manure.
To improve my knowledge of common plant diseases and pests. Also, to learn to better utilize small garden plots. UPDATE: Plot has been purchased, now I'm off to buy seeds!
Got a lot to learn! Big focus is on tomatoes so I can put some up for the year. All other vegetables, too. Also would like to have an herb garden.

I've been messing around in my garden for years but it's been mostly hit and miss. This year I want to get serious. There will be a number of challenges to overcome. I've got a small amount of space to work with. I've got ___ square feet that is currently a mix of flowers, herbs and tomatoes. I'd like to convert it to a raised bed and shift it mostly to food production. I would like to start the transition to no till gardening. An additional challenge will be doing this in a drought and with city water restrictions enforced. I guess I could narrow my focus to growing food in drought conditions.

Turn a half whiskey barrel into a herb garden. growing - cilantro, garlic, green onion, and carrots in half whiskey barrel
I moved to our retreat property full time in January. I have finally gotten the time to start the annual vegetable garden in mid-March. I had to fence the area to keep out the deer. Then I took and a-frame level and marked the contour lines within the area fenced. This week I have started the first woody-bed which is 3 feet wide by 40 feet long. I removed the sod, dug down 18 inches through beautiful topsoil and placed large logs in the bottom of the bed. The sod goes back in the holes (upside-down) around the logs and then I replace the topsoil. 2/3 of the way done so far - hot, dirty, sweaty work but these will be permenant garden beds that will never see a tiller. Shoudl have the first bed done by Thursday, rain coming Fri/Sat then planting will commence next week.
Grow at least enough vegetables that I can make a couple meals that I enjoy eating, and begin canning.
Grow at least three different types of vegatables and then eat them. (never gardened before)

To begin gardening for the first time
I will learn everything I can about gardening. We are going to focus on a combination of permaculture (need to watch the videos) and square food (raised bed) gardening. We have ordered a bunch of heirloom seeds but we need to order more to complete our collection. Our goal is to have everything we would need in seeds if SHTF scenario were to ensue. Also we will collect all of the tools we will need. Gardening will actual start once strategic relocation has occurred but there is much preparation to be done before that happens. Progress: 01/03/2013: have ordered many heirloom seeds to have for our seed bank, have purchased square foot gardening book, have begun studying various gardening materials, have begun investigating what gardening tools and implements we will need
Build a aquaponics system, and a garden in our yard

Front Garden: During the Spring, I will turn the front garden into a bee friendly environment. This will be achieved by the planting of flowers / plants / shrubs in all borders. Plants are to be chosen in conjunction with the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, although the resulting environment will be acceptable for all bees and hover-flies. Once the work is complete, a bee-hive will be installed in the back-garden. Back Garden: After the appalling weather last summer and this winter's floods, I will review which vegetables should be sown/planted this year.
No specific goal set.
Try to be less haphazard with the vegetable garden. Do better record keeping of soil, seeds and plot maps. Read The Intelligent Gardner book instead of skimming it!

restore garden this spring. My son in law wants half, but I told him he could start with 1/4 of what is already set up (50'x4'). Thinking i should weight till the exterior has been redone, so the contractor doesn't trample all my efforts Update 2-19-13 The sun in law moved out of town for college (again)... so i guess he won't be contributing. 4-10-13 planted a few things, added fertility. pumpkins already growing strong. Planting a bit late but it's been cold in Texas.! 4-13-13 trimmed the overgrown rosemary bush. I only trimmed half to not overstress. Dehydrating a batch to see how it turns out.
To become more proficient in my gardening skills and expand my current garden to include most of the produce my family consumes.
Crash course in Silviculture. Managing, using, conserving, and repairing forestland. There was not an option for forestry or silvaculture, so I opted that it is REALLY a LARGE gardening project. I don't know alot about woodland management and with at least 60 acres out of 100, I need to learn this to keep the forest healthy for us, for wildlife and the ecosystem. This is something I can easily learn from the local college. I like learning new things. I need to walk with a timber cruiser and see what s/he has to say. There is lots of flora and fauna on this land and I want to make sure I don't mess up anyone's home, whether it is a mushroom or an elk. Income, firewood, lumber, wildlife refuge, added value for other ag products.

Just finished off first raised bed garden of my adult life with a successful season. Prepping for summer grow season with a significantly larger bed. I just finished establishing a sprout station in my garage and intend on starting to cultivate my own hybrid this year.
Establish an herb garden as well as use hugelkultur/woody beds for our main garden. I am new at gardening, so improving my gardening skills overall is a big goal as well! Put in our first hugelkultur/woody beds 1/24/13 Ordered the fruit trees 1/31/13 - 4 apple trees, a self pollinating pear tree and 6 blueberry bushes. Plus some organic plant food for them - fairly expensive investment for us, but hopefully will pay off in the years to come! Planted apple trees and blueberry bushes on 2/13/2013
To get several raised bed gardens going and producing enough food to lower our dependence on the supermarket.
Background: 2011 - 4x4 raised bed garden with some success. 2012 - 2-4x4 and a 4x8 raised gardens. Goals for 2013: 1. Install another 4x8 raised bed. 2. Install a grow station to start plants indoors. 3. Plant a three sisters garden. 4. Plant a couple blueberry bushes. Progress: 1. Frame for 4x8 raised bed constructed. 2. Shelving and grow lights purchased. 3. 4.
Goal:In 2013. I will care for and grow a productive kitchen garden. In Progress: Have begun prepping new garden area, rerouted fencing and working on irrigation lines this week. 2/14/13 started celery & green onions in window sill. Split & transplanted Stevia into larger pots.
Grow 4 new things in the garden this year and learn how to extend the gardening season. Radishes planted to close together. Potatoes doing really well. Kolorabi doing well. Snow peas doing well but will fall off the vine if not picked early enough.
sucessfully grow and harvest tomatoes, peppers and goood crop with fruit trees.
To expand my backyard garden to feed four and to experiment with a few of the reservoir techniques in raised beds and containers. stage 1 - in progress: I am currently planning companions layout, additional raised bed designs and gathering the materials to build. I've already acquired the seedstock and know *what* and how much I want to grow. I'm also doing once overs on what different types of plants need in terms of sun, acidity, and nutrient.
Grow a backyard herb garden
Set a backyard Eco system in motion so it can provide food, relaxation and habitats. I'd like to start by growing 5 food crops each season and planting at least 15 trees this year on my quarter acre.

Update:5/11/13: 1st attempt scallions didn't germinate, carrots should have direct seeded so that failed, the chard did fine..had repotted but my deck loviing squirrel had a nice salad so only 2 of 12 survived and the tomatoes so far ar doing well. Have 3 in a topsy turvy in the kitchen.... oh and started potatoes last weekend! And also started spinach seeds. Grow as much of our own produce as we can. It will depend upon space and which grow best in containers 2/28/13 just started 36 seeds (baby carrots, scallions, tomato, 2 types of chard) all marked as good for containers. Also have some beans growing in a container already...compliments of my 4yr old daughter who asked if she could plant them about a month ago. I can already see tiny bean pods already forming. last frost here is mid April so I will be starting a few more seeds in the next couple weeks. Thinking spinach, different types of tomatoes, zucchini and some herbs (chives, basil, cilantro, lavender and rosemary) I already have a large rosemary plant..(call it a shrub at this point) growing outside but I won't be able to bring that with me so I am attempting to propagate some in containers.
To double the size of my garden for this year

to help my father design and plant a square foot garden.
I'm starting my first square-foot garden this year, with plans to expand once I get better at it.
to maintain and expand my food production.
To cover our staple vegetable needs entirely from our garden this year.
Maximize garden. Over the last few years we have only used about half of the garden area we originally set up. I'd also like to start implementing permaculture into the area and eventually expand the garden. With two young children it is tough to make time for routine garden maintenance.
As of 3/march/13 Container garden - started seeds Guerrilla gardening - ordered seeds, clay Herb garden - started seeds
expand the garden, then split the garden in 1/2. grow a better half than "my better half" (garden grow-off! 2013)
No specific goal set.
Expand existing garden and grow some plants that are of the heirloom variety
Herbs - Basil (purchased) -
My goal is to have a garden and include my daughters with trying different plants to see what worked well in our area.
Plant a few raised beds and have enough success to can or share. Beds are in and plants popping up. Started all from seed and cutworms devastated in one night.
start a basic backyard garden
I have had a garden over the last two years. I have had decent results. However, I am currently having a deer problem. This year I will plan a way to mitigate my deer population from using my garden as a feeding plot. I will come up with my plan by the end of February, set the structures in place, and have everything set by April.
Establish a more robust garden arrangement on my limited property arrangement. Within those limitations, learn how to grow more diverse crops in less favorable conditions (lighting, etc).
To establish 2 or 3 raised bed gardens for food production. Establish an effective container garden system for the deck. Plan and plant an herb garden for the front porch garden.
When all the fresh food rots, we will have to source our own
To start my first companion garden and attempt to not use pesticides.
Grow at least 90% of what I eat
I have begun starting plants inside as its about 3 - 4 weeks to early to try doing anything outside. I plan on having a very large "garden" and staggering when I plant them so I have fresh ripe food all year not all at once. I dont plan on having only the 20 x 20 typical garden. I plan on increasing my bed size to more than double and planting in the landscape in and threw the normal landscaping. More coming soon and I will be doing many many video's and looking for tips and help.

2/19/13 Just got an opportunity to start a garden from scratch for work. Gonna give it a go. I remember a bit from horticulture classes in HS. I'll fill in the rest listening to TSP. I'm also a sustainability rep at work now as well.
Expand existing garden. Incorporate new vegetables and fruits. Produce enough to feed family fresh fruits and vegetables through the summer while also preserving some for winter.
Plan and start a vegetable and flower garden that is planned for seasonal shift and my area.
Convert an area in our back yard (that is not being used)into a food production garden. We have started some peppers indoors and when the ground is clear I will build the garden planter box (aproximately 20'X8") with wire bottom to keep out gophers. Also we are planting herbs in the front patio flowerbed area as well as dwarf lemon, lime and orange trees in the backyard.
6/7/13......see my progress on the blog I just started.

No specific goal set.
Grow a lush garden that includes vegetables and flowers that will compliment one another. Vegetables to eat and flowers to attract bees. I also want to experiment with hand pollination methods for my squash.
I always start a garden, but never finish it. I end up forgetting to water, and in our 110 degree periods, that is pure death for plants. This year I am breaking my trend. I have already successfully taken some golden sweetie peas and green onions from seed to harvest, and have garlic, shallots, carrots, tomatoes and orca beans growing away. I have also had success with taking dahlia's from tuber to plant. Just getting the first blooms.
Plan and install a new fence around the vegetable garden - I need something more stable and wood chuck proof. I want to plan out the necessary materials, the dimensions, dig the holes, set the posts and hang the fence myself. I will get a great fence (hopefully) and get hands on experience, and a great feeling of accomplishment.

Set up indoor seed starting greenhouse and start my own plants instead of buying expensive ones from the store. Eventually figure out how to garden year round in WI with cold frames and mass heaters, etc
have enough home-grown produce to reduce my grocery bill by one third. 05/27/13 Planted 20+ tomato plants, 15+ pepper plants, brussel sprouts, cabbage, lettuce, spinach, and watermelon. Late start due to weather, skipping peas this year. 06/01/13 Didn't close the gate so rabbits ate all of the brussel sprouts and cabbage. 06/03/13 & 06/04/13 Frost! :(

This year for my spring/summer garden I hope to grow more in a smaller amount of space and also seek to utilize more from my garden. Previously I have let some items go to waste from the garden but through pairing this skill with bartering, community building, pickling and dehydrating I hope to waste less. I would like to set up a garden that requires the least amount of maintenance.
