Composting is the biological process of breaking up of organic waste such as food waste, manure, leaves, grass trimmings, paper, worms, and coffee grounds. It is used in agriculture and gardening generally to improve soil structure rather than as a fertilizer.

I have been doing typical composting for many years, however, now that I am raising livestock I need a method to dispose of large quantities of rabbit and chicken manure. 1/10/13 I have set asside a large area for rotating a compost pile and have begun the process. I also have aquired a source for all the wood chips / sawdust I will likely need for keeping my carbon / nitrogen ratio in balance. The pile is already steaming from the heat being generated which is amazing since the temperatures are in the mid 30s F currently. My goal is to move one foot of compost from the back to the front of the pile a day. 2/4/2013 The pile is nearly composted and I am starting a second pile to follow behind the first. I would say this skill is now completed.

A few months ago I made a compost bi out of a couple old pallets and some spare wood fence boards I had laying around. Since then my wife and I have been throwing all kinds of kitchen scraps (mostly veggie scraps and eggshells) and yard waste as well as lots of coffee grounds (wife works at St. Arbucks). Our pile is about 1 meter high and about takes up the width and depth of a standard pallet which is roughly 4'x4'. I have been turning it about every 2 weeks for the past couple months and things seem to be doing well. i think I am going to stop adding to it and just let it sit till spring when I plant some raised veggie beds. We are contemplating on starting a worm compost system since we have lots of daily kitchen scraps.
